We’ll begin by playing with a variety of traditional and unexpected materials to create a collection of painted papers to use in our books. We’ll create single-page books (zines and meandering book forms), flexagons, lotus books, accordion books (with variations), and pamphlets and double-pamphlet stitched books. Our deconstructed painted pages will give each book initial loose marks and imagery, and we will spend time going back into our book forms with content prompts for drawing, painting, or collage. This class is open to all levels of makers who’d like to explore simple book forms as containers for images, mark-making, text, and experimentation.

We’ll channel childhood summer camp as we form foam-clay trinkets and try out fiber/textile projects (think: friendship bracelets, yarn pom-poms, and cheeky award badges). Give yourself permission to play and scratch that crafty itch in a fun and beginner-friendly environment. Picasso famously said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Art Club for Grownups is a good place to start. So close your laptop, put down your phone, and take an extended lunch break to destress and play!
